...why does my entire Main menu link to the Russian LiveJournal?

No, but I figured out what I did change. Apparently there's a set of extra features that were developed for Cyrillic countries, which somehow got enabled on my account, and they inexplicably turn things Russian. Poorly programmed, I suspect.

As far as I can tell, everything about my settings says I'm in Japan...

[True of this LJ account. The computer I'm using... I'm not sure, this one might not actually know, but if it does then it thinks of me as living in the US. The little gray bar that appears on this page takes me to livejournal.com, but when I'm (say) commenting on something at the community or checking my messages, everything on the Main menu links to livejournal.ru.]

Perhaps. I'll check on some things.

[For instance, I'm going to see if I have this problem with other accounts. I'll test my normal account, [livejournal.com profile] andrusi, and I'm about to register a new one for a second character, which I'll test as well. Comparing the results should give me an idea of where the problem is.]

Huh. Not only does this account not have that problem, but it still has the old-style top menu that I couldn't find a way to activate for Karen. Curiouser and curiouser.

Apparently so. Omega, here, doesn't have the problem either. In fact, he doesn't even have a Main menu, just a "Home" link.

Found it! There was some sort of "Cyrillic features" option that had somehow gotten enabled, and apparently it directed parts of my account to the Russian site without mentioning this.
